Incidents of domestic violence are higher in the deaf community - and often are underreported due to a lack of awareness and barriers to resources. Deaf victims also rely heavily on technology, which puts them at greater risk when that technology is weaponized against them by a current or former intimate partner. In this interactive 1-hour session, Adam Dodge (EndTAB) will be joined by 3 incredible experts - Niamh Donovan (NJCEDV Deaf Advocacy Project), Ali Matheson (DASACC Deaf Services Program Advocate) and Courtney Riseborough (DASACC Vulnerable Populations Program Manager) - to discuss (1) the unique ways domestic violence manifests in the deaf community, (2) the technologies victims rely upon to survive and thrive and (3) how to address and prevent situations of tech-facilitated abuse. Both ASL translation and closed captioning will be provided. In this interactive session, Ebele Onyema, Melanie Sperling (One Love) and Adam Dodge (EndTAB) will discuss how familiar signs like sabotage, guilting, possessiveness, belittling and volatility now show up in online spaces and share examples and approaches for including these signs in presentations, campaigns and discussions with students.
